at The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies

The day and residential courses cover a wide range of subjects, research sources and topics of interest and are open to family historians and all students.

Beginners' courses are suitable for those who have just started to trace a family history or who wish to refresh their memories in the basic sources.

Courses covering several advanced topics are available for students who have basic knowledge of genealogy. More unusual sources will be dealt with so that everyone will find something new and of value. Opportunities to gain practical experience are provided where possible.

All the courses are taught by our experienced tutors and members of staff. For some courses, experts in particular areas of research will be invited to lecture.

Family History September 2005-June 2006, London A course of 35 tutored evening sessions leading to nationally recognised qualifications. The course is to be held at the London School of Economics commencing on Wednesday, 7th September 2005, 7.00pm-9.00pm. The Institute's Syllabus of Study calls for a broadly-based programme of reading and learning about the sources used for genealogical research in the context of family, social and economic history and their applications. Competence in genealogy requires training in the techniques of linking generations by means of documentary evidence. Evening classes often tend to bypass the necessary practical experience. This course, while following the academic path towards the Institute's qualifications, aims to remedy the lack of practice in the use of sources and construction of pedigrees.

The course lectures will include the following topics :- Introduction and Names Family Sources Has it been done before? / Pedigrees General Register Office Records 19th Century Censuses Parish Registers and Bishops' Transcripts

Level A Assessment Wills and Probate Records Palaeography The Parish Chest Nonconformists and their Records Level B Assessment Military Records Trades and Professions

Records of Life and Death Quarter Sessions and Assize Records Land Records Manorial Records Early Nominal Lists Court Records Palaeography Scotland and Ireland Migration Heraldry

This is followed by instructions for taking the examinations for a Certificate in Genealogy

The term dates for the course are as follows:

During the course, students will be expected to complete assignments in their own time. These will be assessed by the course tutors but will not form part of the final grading by examination. If those attending do not complete the set work, the full value of the course will not be achieved.

Introduction to Family History

September - October 2005, Canterbury

The Institute is holding an evening course over a period of six week introducing the subject of Family History. The course is aimed at those students beginning this fascinating hobby and will cover the basic sources needed to start out on the trail of your ancestors.

The course will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7.00pm - 8.30pm, commencing on Tuesday, 27th September 2005.

The course programme will include the following topics - Family History and Genealogy Birth, Marriage and Death 19th Century Census Records Parish Registers Wills Pedigrees and Library Sources
