An collateral ancestor of mine, William Smith wrote a History of the Cities of London and Westminster and the Borough of Southwark in the early 1830's in which he writes,"readers ... are expected to employ their time, either for amusement or for information, in matters of which they are doubtful or ignorant; it is the writer's duty so to connect his narrative, that while he engages the senses, he may feed the mind- to deliver his sentiments, and todescribe his subjects, so clearly, plainly, and justly, that they may be "understood,relished and trusted"

It is my hope that the several Editorials of FAMILY HISTORY that I have written over the past years from October 1962 will have done precisely that.
